Civil status & parish registers

Parish registers (BMS, before 1792) and civil status (after)

Baptisms/births, marriages and burials/deaths anchor every person in time and place, and establish the filiations on which land transmission rests.

What it contains

  • Births/baptisms: child, parents, date, place, godparents.
  • Marriages: spouses, parents, witnesses, date, place — and often professions and residences.
  • Deaths/burials: the deceased, age, date, place, sometimes the spouse or heirs.

Step by step in GénéFoncier

  1. Create the source. The register (parish or civil status), date and cote; upload the scan and transcribe the entry.
  2. Create the person and their event. Add the individual and record the life event — birth, baptism, marriage, death or burial — with its date and place.

Tip: you can also add the event directly from an existing individual's record — open the individual, navigate to the Events tab, and click + Event from there.

    Individual creation form
  3. Set the filiations. Link parents, spouse and children — the backbone for inheritances of land.
  4. Connect to the land. These people become the owners, tenants and heirs you attach to parcels and deeds.
