Mortgage registers

Archival series 4 Q — mortgage offices (conservation des hypothèques)

From 1799, every transfer of property and every mortgage was registered at a local office. Followed methodically, the 4 Q series gives a near-continuous chain of ownership — and the transcriptions reproduce the deeds in full.

The research method (follow the chain)

  1. Alphabetical indicator (registre indicateur) → find the person and the volume/case of their repertory account.
  2. Repertory of formalities (répertoire des formalités) → the person's 'account' lists every formality (transcriptions, inscriptions) with the register volume and number.
  3. Transcription register (transcriptions of translative deeds) → the deed reproduced in full; or the inscription register for mortgages and privileges.

Step by step in GénéFoncier

  1. Create the office. Add the mortgage office as an archive center (its ressort, dates) — every account hangs under it.

  2. Open the account. For the person you found in the indicator, create their repertory account (compte) at that office: volume, case number, opening/closing dates.

Tip: you can also create the account directly from the individual's record — open the individual, navigate to the Hypothèques tab, and click + Account from there.

  3. Add each formality. Under the account, record each formality (transcription or inscription) with its date and register reference, and link its source acts — the original deed and its transcription.
  4. Tie it to the parcel. A transcription of a sale is a dated event on the parcel: link it so the property's chain of ownership lines up with the register.

  5. Cite everywhere. Each ownership step references the transcription that proves it.

GénéFoncier models this chain natively: archive office → account → formalities → source deeds — and the Studio lets you build it visually, recentering on the office, the account or the transcribed act.
